Architecture
If you fancy a more creative construction role then Architect could be the career choice for you. Architects are the people who influence every aspect of the built environment from the design of energy efficient buildings to the integration of new buildings in different contexts.
Architects are involved from the start of a building project, from site selection, right though to completion. Your time will be spent between the office and proposed project sites, assessing the feasibility of a project, inspecting building work or managing the construction process.
If you're looking at a career in Architecture you need to understand the impact of a development on a local community, be confident enough to manage a construction programme and be able to advise on the use and maintenance of existing buildings. You also need to be a good team player as you're likely to be working closely with other people in the construction industry to achieve your goals.
If this does sound like the ideal career for you, you need to be prepared for some hard graft in order to get there as the standard entry route takes a minimum of seven years.
In order to qualify as an architect in the UK you need to gain qualifications that are recognised by both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB)
You need to gain a first degree in Architecture which takes around three or four years before twelve months practical experience, then it's another two years of further study for a diploma or a secondary degree. Next comes another year of on the job experience before you can take your final exams and qualify as a registered Architect.
With the widespread regeneration of parts of Yorkshire there has been a surge in construction-related jobs and qualified, experienced architects are in demand. However, like all employment in construction, Architecture is affected by the state of the economy.
The majority of work in the region is in private practice as partners, associates or salaried architects. Private practices range from small firms with just one architect to large firms with up to 50. Larger practices incorporate other professional areas, such as: urban design, planning, landscape architecture and interior design.
