Web Design

With the fastest growing digital sector in the UK outside of London, Yorkshire is recognised as the leading centre of excellence in the creative and digital industries, with over 13,000 electronics, ICT and media companies based in the region.

Web designers are responsible for the design, layout and coding of web pages. Job opportunities exist within organisations with in-house websites, in e-commerce, film, TV and other media as well as in web design agencies. However, many web designers work on a freelance or contract basis.

Although entry into this type of work is not exclusively at degree level, it is a very popular area with graduates and competition for jobs is high. Relevant qualifications and working knowledge are essential and employers are likely to want to see some practical examples of your work.

Building up an e-portfolio during your studies is a good idea and working on a student union website or developing a website for a local charity are both great ways to show off your skills. Student Gems is a great website where you can advertise your web development skills to businesses all over the UK who are willing to pay students to put there skills to good use designing websites and related media for cash and is a great way to build up your portfolio.
