Field managers
A field manager is responsible for overseeing the deployment of technical expertise and equipment over a specific area. Field managers will often do a lot of travelling and oversee teams of people for many different projects. This could be for an electronic engineering consultancy, telecommunications company or other business where engineers and equipment need to be managed and coordinated. Projects can be of a one off technical installation nature or involve continuous customer support.
Expertise in electronic engineering and IT is important but communicative skills and the ability to manage are equally crucial. Graduates may start their career as a field manager, receiving on-the-job training, or move into the area after gaining experience in another area of electronics and communications.
Small to medium sized engineering consultancy firms require field managers and many of these exist in the region but there are also more specific needs within larger companies. For example, regional offices for national communications companies.
Entry into the industry will normally require a specific related degree backed up by a good portfolio as well as experience of working as part of a team and organising or co-ordinating teams of people. Being part of a sports team or organising a society at university would make great additions to your CV and help make you more attractive to future employers.
