There are 23 district, metropolitan district and unitary councils in this region. Each of them has statutory responsibility for enforcing laws and regulations concerning: environmental pollution, food hygiene, housing conditions and occupational health and safety. In some authorities, these functions are carried out by a dedicated Environmental Health department, while in others they may be part of the remit of a larger department which also have other licensing and regulatory responsibilities.

In order to work as an Environmental Heath Officer with a local authority you will need to obtain a degree which is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. At present, three institutions offer MSc courses for graduates in relevant science subjects. Alternatively, graduates can apply for admission to a full or part-time undergraduate course. Experienced Environmental Heath Officer's can apply for posts with private environmental health consultancies.
