Technical and User Support
Technical and User Support roles are available in companies and organisations of all sizes. If a company has more than 50 or so computer users, they are likely to need a full-time technical support person or equivalent. In a smaller company, this role is sometimes combined with that of the network specialist. In regions with large numbers of small and medium sized companies the scope for this type of work across all sorts of industry is high. In West Yorkshire, for example, 99% of all businesses have 200 employees or less, and the number is very high in Yorkshire and Humberside as a whole.
While these roles are essentially technical, the skills you will need are wide-ranging. Graduates looking to work in the sector will need strong analytical, diagnostic and troubleshooting skills as well as excellent interpersonal and customer service skills especially as technical support is often provided online, via email, or over the telephone.
You will need to be able to explain complex process and information to different types of people who may have little or no technical knowledge of IT.
You might also find yourself training others on computer systems and packages especially if the organisation is using a bespoke software or complex systems or networks.
