IT Consultancy

Many larger companies now outsource their IT functions providing many roles for IT Consultants and it is one of the most common roles in IT for graduates to enter. Professional services firms such as Accenture, PriceWaterhouseCooper, IBM and Logica provide consultancy on a national and international basis. Some, such as IBM, will build both the hardware and software while others, such as Accenture, will focus on providing software and management consultancy services.

For management consultancy roles, many companies will recruit from any degree discipline although a knowledge and interest in IT is preferred. You'll need to be a good communicator and be able to work effectively with a wide range of different people on a daily basis. Work is often project-based and short-term and a willingness to travel is often required. Some organisations do require students to have an IT or IT related degree.

There are a variety of IT and management consultancies with offices in the Yorkshire region such as Synetgra, an IT consultancy in Leeds. Many consultants, after gaining specialist skills, decide to become self-employed which can be worthwhile if you can offer specialist skills in shortage areas.
