Hospitality

Hotel management mainly involves business development, reservation, reception and housekeeping services. It can also involve overseeing restaurant, beverage and food preparation services, although in larger hotels these are likely to be the responsibilities of departmental team leaders. As well as larger companies such as Marriott, Novotel, Holiday Inn that have basis in the region, Yorkshire also has loads of small, budget and niche (or boutique) hotels offering varied opportunities.

Restaurant and bar management work involves overseeing all aspects of commercial operation, from supply and service delivery to the recruitment and development of new staff. Pubs and clubs is a rapidly expanding sector in Yorkshire, both in chain and independent concerns, most notably in the bigger cities of Leeds and Sheffield. Staff turnover is relatively high but progression within the organisation can be rapid. Opportunities also exist within public sector institutions such as schools, universities, hospitals, civil service departments and uniformed services.

Event and conference management opportunities can often be found in larger hotel groups, at multi-functional sports or entertainment arenas and through specialist exhibition and event organising companies. Opportunities exist across the region but Harrogate has built a reputation for conferencing and is home to the National Conference Centre.

Graduates looking to enter this area of work will have to be confident communicators, cool in a crisis and highly organised. You'll also need to have a good chunk of relevant work experience on your CV. This could be anything from a part time job in a bar or restaurant to show you have experience of working within a busy customer facing environment to helping organise events at your Student Union.
