Training and Development

With the increasing emphasis on Continuing Professional Development (CPD), there are opportunities within training and development across a wide range of public and private employment sectors. Training can be delivered as part of an in-house function in larger organisations or as a service offered by a consultancy or independent providers. Independent providers may specialise for example in IT or Customer Service. Experienced trainers may also work on a freelance or self employed basis.

From a general perspective, training roles normally incorporate the following responsibilities; identifying organisational and individual training needs, designing and developing programmes to meet those needs and managing the delivery of the training to agreed specifications and deadlines.

It is not common for inexperienced graduates to be recruited directly into training roles as previous experience in a personnel related area will normally be required. It is common to work your way up from a more administrative or trainee type role.

Post graduate qualifications are not essential but any qualification recognised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) will be advantageous. The CIPD Certificate in Training Practice is suitable for those starting their career in training and this is normally taken whilst in employment. Alternative on-the-job qualifications are National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). They are available in Learning and Development at levels three, four and five.  NVQs can also lead to CIPD membership.
