Britain's leading rail freight operator, EWS Railways, is based in Doncaster, an important railway junction on the main line connecting Edinburgh and London. EWS haul 80% of Britain's rail freight, moving over 100 million tonnes of freight each year, operating over 8,000 trains each week, and employing 6,200 staff across Britain. EWS are confident that nationally rail will take a 20% share of the haulage market by 2010.
The site of the channel tunnel freight depot is just south of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, and there is also a rail freight depot at Selby in North Yorkshire. Historically, York has always been a railway centre, and while the rail industry there has changed, it still remains economically significant with potential for the future. The port of Immingham in East Yorkshire is the biggest generator of rail freight in the UK and new rail links are being developed to the Humber ports to ensure that freight can be moved easily. There are opportunities in this area for graduates in the co-ordination of freight movement, the maintenance of railway lines and the reviewing, planning and co-ordination of passenger routes.
