Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering professionals are the people that turn complex designs into a reality. They're essential to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a wide range of construction projects such as bridges, tunnels, dams, ports, highways and large buildings.

More than 4,000 professional civil engineers currently live and work in Yorkshire and according to the Institution of Civil Engineers this is set to rise with new opportunities existing in the restoration of transport structures and construction of recycling and waste treatment facilities in the region.

One project like this is Sheffield's landmark Energy Recovery Facility, capable of turning almost all of the city's 180,000 annual tonnes of waste into heat and electricity which is now fully operational and won the ICE Yorkshire & Humber 2005 Regional Construction Award which recognises civil engineering design excellence.

In a job in Civil Engineering you may choose to specialise in a particular area:

As a Consultant you would be giving professional advice to look after the interests of clients. Acting in a variety of roles including designers, managers and arbitrators, you will ensure that projects run smoothly, on schedule and within the agreed budget.

As a Contractor you would be involved in every area of the industry. You could be highly specialised or cover every field of the industry from house building, to road and rail construction.

Civil Engineering Surveyors and Commercial Managers cover each stage of a project including the design and estimating the cost, through to construction. They also monitor the project on completion checking on the condition and the performance of installations.

Because of society's high demand for infrastructure in areas of energy, transportation and water supply and treatment, coupled with increasing public concern about environmental issues the work of Civil Engineers is becoming increasingly relevant and continuingly challenging.

Also major developments such as the Sevenstones new retail quarter and digital e-campus in Sheffield, the regeneration of the Quarry Hill area of Leeds, the Remaking Barnsley initiative, construction of new retail centres both within and outside the region's towns and cities as well as the need for additional housing and measures to reduce flooding in the region are all areas requiring Civil Engineers.

Coupled with a shortage of skills and engineers in this sector as the older generation retires, there should be plenty of new opportunities for working in the region.
