Voluntary & Charity
Fundraising
Fundraisers work for charities or related organisations such as schools, theatres, higher education institutions or political parties. The work entails raising awareness of the charity and its objectives amongst the general public, businesses and other organisations in order to increase income. Fundraisers need to find new and creative ways of generating income and will be responsible for organising a variety of activities including special events, campaigns and collections.
Vacancies do occur in Yorkshire and the Humber although the majority of opportunities will be in the regional cities such as Leeds. Some fundraisers work from home looking after a designated region whilst others will be based at a charity's headquarters or regional office.
The Institute of Fundraising is the professional body representing and supporting fundraisers. There's a Yorkshire regional group of the Institute that organises local events for those employed as fundraisers and their webpage lists the current committee members.
The Charity Commission has an on-line register of charities that can be searched by charity name, location, or type of work. Contact details for the top 500 charities in terms of income, expenditure and funds can be located via the Charitiesdirect.com website (http://www.charitiesdirect.com). Details of regionally based charities and voluntary organisations may also be obtained from local Councils for Voluntary Services (CVS) throughout the region. Contact details for regional CVS offices can be found through the National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service (NACVS) website.
If you like the idea of becoming a fundraiser then you'll need to make sure you have plenty of relevant experience on your CV. You could volunteer with a local charity helping with events or organise your own event to benefit a needy cause. The industry is quite hard to get into and paid roles normally require experience. Gaining a related job in the private sector such as marketing or events can help you gain the relevant experience you need to move into the sector.
